Many of us are looking for refreshing ways to cool off this summer. And while we may enjoy water fights with squirt guns all summer long, the Davenport Fire Department is raising the bar. They are bringing out the high-powered fire hoses for a special event this weekend. Werner Restoration is proud to sponsor the 4th Annual Street Fest Water Fights in downtown Davenport this Saturday, July 25. This event gives the community the opportunity to cheer on local firefighters as they compete for cash prizes, bragging rights, and trophies in this “water tug-of-war.” The objective of the water fights is for firefighters at one end to move a barrel with the water from a high-powered hose, as firefighters at the opposite end attempt to do the same. This event attracts fire fighters from all over the metro Quad Cities and beyond. The Water Fight is a fun event for all ages. It may also be the closest that many Quad Citians will come to these high powered hoses. This is a unique way to showcase the local firefighters and the skills it takes to do this job.
“The role of a firefighter has expanded greatly,” says Jason Roth, president emeritus with the Davenport Association of Professional Firefighters (Local 17). “Today, we’ve been successful at engineering a lot of hazards away – from traditional fires to current issues like bird flu.” Registration runs from 10 – 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 25. The women’s division starts at noon and the men’s division is scheduled to follow. First place winners receive $500 cash and second place winners take home $250 cash. Members of Local 17 will also be selling T-shirts to benefit local charities. Check out this video to see last year’s competitors in action.
The Street Fest Water Fights is one event during a packed weekend of community fun in downtown Davenport. From live music to unique shopping opportunities and from delicious food to family activities, there is something for everyone.
